Bar D'O Jet Lounge Life Mother Nell's
Pyramid Lounge Spy Webster Hall
Knowing who's where in the denizens of disco dance halls is crucial. Otherwise, you are apt to run in to a gaggle of guidos in tank tops and gold chains. The short list of which clubs are really buzzing is well…short, even in NYC.
BAR D'O
29 BEDFORD SREET @ HOUSTON AND 6TH AVE.
212-627-1580
This is a must see for any Billy Holiday fan. Joey Arias, the downtown legend, "channels" Ms. Holiday every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at this little watering hole. He is totally fabulous. He sounds just like the Diva. Check out the show then head to Mother.
JET LOUNGE
286 SPRING STREET (BETWEEN VARICK AND HUDSON)
212-675-2277
A staple for the model wannabe crowd. Come here and lounge the night away with a cosmopolitan martini or two. The crowd is gorgeous in that Kate Moss kind of way where everyone tries terribly hard not to try hard. The more casual you dress, the hipper you'll seem. And remember to talk about how annoying the Hamptons were last summer!
LIFE
158 BLEEKER STREET @ THOMPSON ST.
212-420-1999
Ah…the fabulous life of the party!! That is LIFE. Thursdays the scene is a casual table-hopping event in the VIP room. Watch the A list crowd schmooze the plebeians as Walter V spins a Japanese, Techno, uber-cool sound. This crowd is for real, so whip out those Gucci pumps girls and dance till your toes turn blue. Fridays are a bit more mainstream with an investment banker or two who fancy themselves hip. It rocks! Debbie does it every week without fail.
MOTHER
432 W. 14TH STREET @ WASHINGTON
212-366-5680
The utmost in an underground experience…Located in the fabulously un-hip meat market district, owners and nightlife dinosaurs Johnny Dynel and Chi Chi Valenti still pull in the underground A-list crowd. On Tuesday, it's the famous "Jackie '60" party. Watch Debbie Harry chain smoke and designer John Galliano dance on the bar. DJ Jackie spins on "Dike Night" (Sundays), and Johnny, the best DJ ever, rocks it out most every other night of the week. Be forewarned…the downstairs is a bit of a pit. This can be a good thing if you're up for watching the likes of Patricia Field dirty dancing her long time and hot lover, Rebecca. It's the sort of place where all the other club owners end up after their own joints have closed.
NELL'S
246 W. 14TH STREET BETWEEN 6TH AND 7TH AVEENUES
212-675-1567
The place that became famous for not letting in the likes of Cher and Madonna has gone Jazzy. Great bands rock the upscale and very heterosexual, lounge atmosphere. Naomi Campbell hosts birthday parties here and, if you're lucky, "The Artist"(Prince) just might show up and play a set. Or, you might spot him on the claustrophobic dance floor below. Thursdays and Fridays are best when Thomas Moller, Nell's original manager and now weekly promoter, brings in the ethnically mixed crowd. This 6'6'' tall German hunk has seen his share of the scene. And if you buy art, buy a piece from him…he's a hot painter and on the brink of art world stardom. Partner, Nell Campbell (and club namesake), of Rocky Horror Picture Show fame, is still a very visible and active fixture.
PYRAMID LOUNGE
101 AVENUE A
This joint is a New York institution where the drag movement not only started but also keeps going strong. Great place to take that out of town cousin of yours who you want to freak out. Order a stiff one from the bar and check out the major queen scene. Love this place for the shock value, the cheap drinks and the shady vibe.
SPY
101 GREENE STREET BETWEEN SPRING AND PRINCE
212-343-9000
The quintessential B-model watering hole has become, in a short time, a ridiculous institution. Watch no name, big hair beauties pose with their rich and very short boyfriends…. These men with Napoleon complexes order up bottles of Veuve by the magnum in order to impress the "Twiggies". It can be a festive scene, but be warned, there is often a "private party", a.k.a., you don't look cool enough or skinny enough to warrant entry. Men: Don't bother if you're not with hot chicks!
WEBSTER HALL
125 E. 11TH STREET 2 13TH STREET
212-353-1600
If you are into platforms, glam-rock and club kids, look no further. Watch Richie Rich and Michael Alig proteges romp around with lunch pails and dilated pupils. Debbie says don't do it unless you're under 22 or swing both ways. If you fall into either category, consider this a slice of heaven on earth. DJ's rock the cavernous theatre with a techno touch that'll get your boogie shoes out on the dance floor.
