NANTUCKET: The St. Barths of the USA. It’s like walking into a living advertisement for Ralph Lauren. Everyone has the Natural Polo glow. The children are all blond and strikingly beautiful. The Uber-wealthy flock here and the who’s who of America’s corporate elite reside here in their multi-million dollar homes. Tommy Hilfiger, Lee Iacocca, Abby Johnson of Fidelity, John Fairchild of Fairchild Publications, Wayne Huizenga, owner of Blockbuster and the Miami Dolphins, just to name a few.
But don’t be fooled folks. Nantucket frowns on anything garish or glitzy. Even Huizenga’s $8.5 million home is "tasteful" and in keeping with the Nantucket code of classic gray shingle. This is the anti-Hamptons. Old money reigns supreme here. It’s where the wealthy go to be left alone or to socialize quietly in private homes. However, there is definitely a scene here for the rest of us, but in order to gain entry, ya gotta look the part!
The preferred form of transportation to the island: Private jet or private yacht. You can fly commercial or take the ferry if need be.
The Nantucket Look for Guys: Washed out Nantucket Reds, worn in vintage Lacoste shirts, anything Polo and Gucci loafers.
The Nantucket Look For Gals: Lilly Pulitzer dresses (gag!), accesorized with Nantucket lightship baskets, and lots of pearls. And don’t forget your Jack Roger sandals.
To fit in with the yachties: Sperry sneakers, Patagonia fleece jackets and L.L. Bean Canvas Boat Bags.
