WHY IT ROCKS: THE REAL DEAL
On the southern tip of Miami Beach sits the Art Deco District known as South Beach. Over the past ten years, it has developed in to one of the places to see and be seen. Major movers and shakers in fashion, film and music have flocked to South Beach to bask in the neon glow of all that is hip and cool.
Unfortunately, with all the buzz about beautiful people and bountiful sex, a new breed of "Wannabes" has descended upon the hip strip. It has become a land mine littered with drugged out 18 year old club kids with nose rings and no clue.
Seven years ago South Beach was an easy read. A stroll down the "strip"
(Ocean Drive from 5th to 15th Street) would expose you to much of the area’s St.
Tropezian allure. Now, the same stroll will expose you to throngs of pushy tourists
of all shapes and sizes. Restaurant hostess will holler at you, "view the menu" and
"eat here." (Painfully reminiscent of the Promenade in Nice) and a far cry from the edgy hipness of yester-year.
But have no fear...Debbie is here.

South Beach still sizzles with an energy like no other state side, warm weather resort. And,
yes, it is still littered with masses of mindless models and fashion followers. However,
the truly hip element of South Beach is much less obvious. The hot spots are often tucked
away. The organic South Beach sensuality can still be easily found...if you know where to
go and when to go there. So my darlings, cruise this site frequently since the old saying
that "today’s hot spot is tomorrow’s morgue" is even more true in South Beach than anyplace else.

The Basics:
Most night clubs start to rock around 1am and stay open till 5am.
The restaurants typically serve til midnight or 1am on weekends, 11pm on weeknights.
Some of the "charming art deco hotels" have dumpy, dirty rooms. Don’t go by lobby decor alone. Read the Hotel section for the best of the hotel choices.
Taxis are easy to come by.
Parking is becoming next to impossible on weekends.
If you are driving, valet park your car at some central restaurant or hotel like the Delano, if the town parking lots are full, and take taxis to get around.
Weekends in high season can be painfully packed with Miami’s version of the "bridge and Tunnel crowd".
Stay away on New Years Eve when this "B and T crowd" is out in force and 18 year old kids are puking on every street corner. (Unless, of course, you are headed to the Delano for the annual party).
Do come during the shoulder season...when it is less of a zoo...October and November especially. Thanksgiving is quite popular with the elite homosexual crowd.
Weekdays are more sane than weekends.
Drugs are a big part of the club culture. Coke, ecstasy, heroin, pot, whatever. Keep it in mind if you plan on picking someone up. That warm and fuzzy vibe you are picking up from some model wannabe may be more a product of the ecstasy than how much he or she really digs you. When the "E" wears off so will the magic connection.
Use a condom or don’t go there! Between the drugs and the sexual ambiguity of some of the "sexy scenesters" you just can’t assess your risk factor. Safer yet...look...but don’t touch!
