MELROSE WEST OF FAIRFAX
This is the only part of Melrose to shop on. If anyone, and I repeat, anyone tell you to check out the stretch between La Brea and Fairfax, run. Run fast, unless you like cheap, shitty, mall-like fashion crap sold by MTV vee-jay wannabes.
FRED SEGAL
8118 MELROSE AVE. LOS ANGELES
(213)651-3698
A LA fashion institution. Always very progressive in its merchandise. Endorses young, edgy designers before the big guys do. Also stock the Jill Sanders, the Marc Jacobs of the moment. The semiannual sale brings ‘em in in droves. You see, hardly anything goes on sale at Fred Segal’s, so people, plebs and celebs, wait around the block for the opening day of the big event. Where else can you buy a one thousand dollar belt for three hundred and fifty bucks and feel like you got a bargain? It’s definitely fashion for fashion’s sake, which is always fabulous!
DECADES
8214 MELROSE AVE., LOS ANGELES
(213)655-0223
Surely one of LA’s most unique boutiques around. If you’re in the market for vintage couture, then you’ve found heaven on earth, baby! Everything from the largest Emilio Pucci selection in town to vintage Halston to Rudi Gernreich (remember the "topless swimsuit"?), Pauline Trigere and Yves Saint Laurent, not to mention Galanos. So, if you’re looking to release that Holly Golightly from within, you must stop in. And ask for Cameron…He’s the man!
LA BREA AREA
The hipest new area in town, this stretch north of Wilshire not only has some of the best feeds in town, but offers the ultimate in cutting edge fashion. And you can actually walk around…just be sure to park close by! Stores every fashion junkie must check out:
AMERICAN RAG
150 S. LA BREA LOS ANGELES
(213) 935-3154
It started as a cheapo used clothing store, and now has the best merchandise in town at reasonable, yet not cheap, price points. They carry everything from Theory (offshoot of Product) to Daryl K. to Parallel.Great vintage glasses, too.
AMERICAN RAG SHOES
144 S. LA BREA, LOS ANGELES
(213) 931-6903
Edgiest collection around. Patrick Cox to Michelle Mason.
AMERICAN RAG MAISON ET CAFÉ
148 S. LA BREA, Los Angeles
(213) 936-4720
Check it out for hard to find vintage china and grab a quick dejeuner at the counter.
BEVERLY HILLS
Believe it or not, there are some fabulous shops that line Brighton Way just off of Rodeo Drive. Yes darlings, you can afford to buy in Beverly Hills. Meander north on Rodeo til you hit Brighton Way. Take a left and check out such chic boutiques as Prada, Maroalo Shoes, Advantage and Morgan De Toi. When these stores have sales you can get some fab fashions at great prices! The big name department stores line Wilshire Blvd. Can't go wrong with Barney's or Neiman's.
BARNEY’S
WILSHIRE BOULEVARD AT RODEO
BEVERLY HILLS
It is what it is…and what it is is fabulous! But LA has definitely put its own spin on the New York institution. At least in New York the clientele pretends to have some semblance of a life outside of shopping…They’re magazine editors, advertising executives and rich fundraising types. But in Tinseltown? We’re talking pure, unabashed fashion groupies who’ll rip your hair out for the last Rifat Ozbek left on the rack. Take mace. And don’t miss the semiannual sales/parties…Every "fabulous" person must attend to sip on champagne while you shop and mingle with the hot Hollywood prospects of tomorrow. We’re not sure, but we believe you must have been in a featured film at Sundance to attend. Oh, and grab a bite at Barney's Greengrass when you need to recharge after charging the life out of your cards. Make sure you’re not maxed out, ‘cause it’ll cost you!
