Doing Boston’s hot spots is as much about timing as it is about venue. You can’t miss if you follow this routing chart of the "inside" scene in Boston.

Do drinks at the bar at Mistral about 9:30 PM. Order up a bite to eat if you are lucky enough to grab a bar stool. The G-lounge is the final stop in the up and coming Leather District (now partially owned by Paul Roiff of Mistral). The G-lounge is the last to close at 2:00 am. The bartenders here know how to make a killer Cosmopolitan. The G-lounge appeals to a less pretentious set than Mistral but more mature than West Street. Or, head over to Aria for a little boogie woogie.

Alternate route: If you still haven’t eaten at 12:30 am go into the South End and do dinner at The Franklin Cafe. A mixed gay/straight crowd mingles at the tiny bar. The food here is inventive and impressive.

Last stop of the night: The place where people have a high "scoring " ratio is the oh so friendly West Street Grille. It closely resembles a frat house party of sorts, so go with a buzz on so you don’t get annoyed when some buffed 25 year old spills his beer on you. The bar scene gets going about 11:30 pm. It’s also a restaurant. Head directly to the top floor for some partial sanity.
SUMMER HOT FLASH
Every Friday night of the summer starting in June, The Museum of Fine Arts hosts a jam packed cocktail party for the 25-45 crowd.(It looks like a dressed up version of the typical Newbury Street crawlers with a few new faces thrown in.) It is all quite civilized, with a jazz trio, light munchies (pay for these) and a cash bar. The $8 cover is well worth it. During the winter months the parties are held the first Friday of the month. The place fills up early (6:30 pm) and closes down around 9 pm. It’s a perfect way to begin a Friday night out in Boston.
