FILENE’S BASEMENT Downtown Crossing
| – Like CENTURY 21 in New York, only better! The Basement, as it’s often referred to, has surplus designer merchandise at a fraction of the original cost. OK, so there might be a slight imperfection, or you may not have thought you wanted that evening gown in green, per say, but who are you to complain when you’re getting it at 75% off?!? No seriously, got my favorite Donna Karan jacket there for $125. Original cost? $695!!! And it is black, thank you very much. Two tips 1. Go often as merchandise moves fast and new lots come in. 2. Get ready to fight. Bargain shopping brings out the worst in us and I’ve seen scuttles over coveted items that make the Tyson/Holyfield fight look like recess. | |
| LOUIS, BOSTON | |
| Can’t afford the astronomical prices, or simply don’t want to? Then check out the LOUIS semi-annual super-sale. It is the bomb! All those fabulous designer digs at a mere pittance!! Men must attend!!! Saw a Zegna suit there, original price $950. Semiannual supersale price? $225. A bargain shopper’s wet dream. | |

DOMAIN FURNISHINGS (781) 769-9130
| Dare we say that it is worth a trip to Boston just to visit this warehouse store in Norwood (approx. 30 minutes from downtown – call for directions)?! If you’ve ever been to one of their retail shops, you know the quality of the goods. For those of you who haven’t, you haven’t really lived!! Luxurious, plush sofas, gorgeous armoires, unusual sconces, amazing fabrics, an interior designer’s haven. In fact, a lot of New York’s best shop here. Anyway, you get all the goods for sizable discounts. And they deliver nationwide! Did we mention there’s no sales tax? | |

SILVERTONE’S BAR & GRILL 69 BROMFIELD AVE (617) 338-7887
| Cool place. Not terribly upscale, but funky gray-slick, techy-modern décor with nice mix of wood furnishings and antiques is drawing in the 30-somthings and Gen-Xer. Bonus points: The food is good! Husband and wife owners, Josh Childs and Katy Gehan, worked in Boston’s swankiest restaurants for years before opening this up-and-comer. Prices are super reasonable. Most expensive item on the menu? Daily fresh fish at 12 Bucks! Try the trout almondine if it’s in when you are. Tell chef Peter Irving that we sent you, and he’s likely to send you out a special something. | |
|
THE DELUX CAFÉ 100 CHANDLER ST. (617) 338-5258
| It looks more like a bar than a restaurant, and more people drink than eat, but this place is the place for the young, cutting edge art scene crowd in Boston. And the food is moderately priced considering the fare. Eclectic, international, fusion and healthy are words that come to mind when we’re munching the day’s vegan entrée of Indian-style couscous with Moroccan vegetables, or nibbling the crispy duck legs served over crispy rice noodles. Great, hard to find microbrews on tap. Much of the Boston band scene hangs here. Very casual. Kitchen’s open until 11:30, bar ‘til 2:00am. | |

Hot Pick: Pizza at the bar at MISTRAL. Best bet for those who want to soak in the action, without soaking through the wallet. |
